Bird dining table

he Bird side table, emblematic project of the natural and organic poetry of Tapio Wirkkala, was recently reissued by Poltrona Frau as a tribute to the great Finnish designer and artist. A sinuous, simple and abstract design all at the same time, inspired by the silhouette of a bird, a recurring theme in his sculptures and design work.

The Bird side table is a real challenge from a manufacturing perspective because of the complexity of the delicate workmanship that goes into the table top. The results are never predictable and every single piece is therefore unique.

The top of the Bird side table is formed of layers of cut birch of different thicknesses that makes it possible to create a distinctive symmetrical diagonal design on the surface. Expert craftsmanship which is completed with a conical cut birch insert that runs though the centre along the entire length of the top. This feature, painted black, creates an incisive graphic symbol that continues in the curved solid birch leg, an elegant visual reference to the beak of a wading bird. The natural oil and wax-based surface finish enhances the beauty of the wood. Bird’s feet are in solid birch painted black.
